This contest has become one of our most successful programs. 277 teams, that is 554 students participated in the program. They completed the task sheets, made birdfeeders and fed birds during the winter. They also observed the birds, wrote a diary about their findings, and sent in over 600 photos.
A four-month competition entitled “Winter is here” ended on the 4th of March. The goal of the program was to teach children about animals that adapt to winter conditions, and to encourage children to feed non-migratory birds.
This contest has become one of our most successful programs. 277 teams, that is 554 students participated in the program. They completed the task sheets, made birdfeeders and fed birds during the winter. They also observed the birds, wrote a diary about their findings, and sent in over 600 photos. Besides helping the children focus on non-migratory birds, we also wanted to tackle misconceptions about feeding birds and clarifying the differences between birdfeeders and wood nests.
The solutions to the questionnaire, along with detailed explanations, have been developed into educational material and can be downloaded from our website. We have also published material summarizing winter bird feeding.
